College of Charleston Freshman Nivardo Vivar has been named the first recipient of the William V. Moore endowed scholarship. The scholarship is intended to help support students committed to improving the quality of life for all South Carolinians and promoting understanding among diverse groups.
Vivar is committed to expanding outreach to Hispanic communities, fostering parental involvement, and helping to inspire a love of learning in all students. He is a political science major who serves on the Honor Board, as an SGA senator, and volunteers at the Ronald McDonald House. He plans on a career as an attorney specifically dealing with education, immigration, or human rights.
The $1,000 renewable scholarship was made possible by a bequest by Dr. Moore, Professor of Political Science from 1974 to 2009, and contributions of his family, friends, and colleagues. Dr. Moore’s son Mark, Assistant Dean of Students at the Charleston School of Law, had the honor of presenting the award.
