The College of Charleston is throwing a birthday party for a man who has been a driving force for the School of Business.

The school will hold a 90th birthday party of George Spaulding.   Officials say that it is a unique opportunity to pay tribute to someone who has raised millions of dollars for the college. Spaulding is also credited for bringing various business leaders to campus to take part in the George Spaulding Distinguished Speaker Series.

He came to the College of Charleston after working as an executive for some of the world’s major car labels — Buick, Chevrolet, Opel, Pontiac and General Motors.  After retiring from the industry, Spaulding moved  from Flint, Michigan to Kiawah Island where he became friends with former College of Charleston basketball coach John Kresse and his wife Sue Sommer- Kresse.   That friendship opened up a three-decade relationship with the College.  The School of Business saw the opportunity to use George’s knowledge and experience in the classroom and asked him to become a guest lecturer.

He agreed.

But he did not stop there.  Besides teaching, Spaulding has served on the school’s Board of Governors and the College of Charleston Foundation Board.  He has also recruited business leaders as part of the George Spaulding Speaker Series. Some of the lecturers he’s helped bring in include the CEO of Proctor & Gamble, executives from the auto industry and from Avon.
