For the 6th consecutive year, the College of Charleston’s Department of Hispanic Studies is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 through October 15) with numerous activities.
The School of Languages Cultures and World Affairs will host the showing of Hispanic movies in Addlestone, 227 on September 22 and October 6; tertulias, informal gatherings to practice conversational Spanish, will be held on September 24, October 15, 29 and November 12 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Yo Burrito on Wentworth Street; the Fresh Food Company will be serving authentic Hispanic cuisine for lunch and dinner the week of September 20-24; residents of the Spanish House (8 Bull Street), the first themed house in the history of the College of Charleston, will volunteer at the Latin American Festival on October 3 from 12-6:00pm at Wannamaker County Park.
“The celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month is not only an important extra-curricular activity at the College, but it is an extremely important venue for educating both our students and the community alike about the culture, language and history of the largest minority group in the U.S.,” said Dr. Mark P. Del Mastro, chair of the Department of Hispanic Studies. “The U.S. is currently the 2nd largest populated country of Hispanics in the world—second only to Mexico—and in 2008 South Carolina experienced the second largest growth of Hispanics of the 50 states. Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month affords us the opportunity to re-acquaint ourselves with this critically important and ever-growing sector of U.S. society.”
