More than 50 College of Charleston professors and eight students have earned the Global Scholars designation in the first year of the program. The Global Scholars Program is a university-wide initiative designed to increase the capacity of students and faculty to contribute productively as global citizens. The program aims to help meet the changing demands brought about by globalization and recognizes students and faculty members who structure their learning and work around developing a wider global world view. This program is unique in the nation for its inclusiveness of faculty and all students regardless of major.

“Students who earn this designation will have something tangible to show employers and graduate schools exemplifying their engagement in globalization,” said Program Co-Director Joe Weyers, a professor of Spanish. “We’re also hopeful the program will provide a catalyst for continued change in curriculum to a more international focus.”

To earn the Global Scholar designation, students must demonstrate language proficiency, incorporate international/global courses and extracurricular activities into their academic studies, participate in an overseas learning experience, and maintain a 3.0 GPA.

Faculty members must demonstrate foreign language proficiency, participate in international events, and complete a study, work or teaching abroad experience. Faulty members are required to reapply for their Global Scholar designation every five years.
