The College of Charleston’s Office of Institutional Diversity will host “Diversity at College of Charleston Week” beginning on October 18, 2010.

The primary purpose of Diversity Week is four-fold: (1) to provide the College community an opportunity to explore the different dimensions of human diversity and the impact diversity has on our lives as individuals and as members of a particular group; (2) to recognize the centrality of diversity to achieving inclusive institutional excellence; (3) to celebrate the beauty and richness of domestic and global diversity at the College of Charleston; and (4) to promote a culture of collective responsibility for diversity at the College, while fostering inclusive community.

The kick-off Opening Ceremony is at 4:30 p.m. in the Stern Garden Center. Opening ceremony highlights include a keynote presentation by Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley.

The entire week will be marked by rich and exciting educational, cultural, social, and outreach diversity events, to be held throughout the corners of the campus — from the classroom to the open gardens on campus. Events will include lectures, panel discussions, film series, multicultural/international food festival, cultural dance, multicultural fashion show, and exhibitions.

Both the opening and closing ceremonies for this year’s “Diversity At College of Charleston Week” will be marked by dynamic and powerful multicultural music and dance performances by the Tropic Culture Band from North Carolina and  Charleston’s Buen Ache Dance Group,  as well as all-inclusive multicultural food.

The closing ceremony will be at 5:00 p.m. in the Stern Center Gardens.

Events are free and open to the public.
