The College of Charleston men’s soccer team made its debut in the NSCAA/HendrickCars.com Division I Men’s Soccer Rankings as the No. 25 team in the sixth edition of the 2010 poll. Additionally, the Cougars maintained the No. 4 spot in the South Regional Rankings for the second week in a row.

Last week, the Cougars were the third-team-out of the polls but made the jump to No. 25 with wins over Wofford and Elon. No. 25 CofC is unbeaten against teams outside of the top 25 (7-0-1) and 1-2 against ranked opponents.

The Cougars maintained their position in the South Region as the No. 4 squad. The Cougars are 3-0-1 against teams ranked in the South Region with wins over No. 7 Wake Forest, No. 8 Elon and No. 9 Davidson and a tie with No. 10 Stetson.

CofC currently leads the Southern Conference in both goals scored (1.82 GPG) and goals against average (0.53 GAA). The 0.53 GAA equals the all-time best in SoCon history (Furman, 1986) since the record was kept beginning in 1978. Nationally, the Cougars tie for 34th in GPG and 10th in GAA.

Freshman goalkeeper Kees Heemskerk (Zaandam, Holland) is tied for 11th in the nation in GAA and boasts the fourth-best save percentage (.891) in the country.

The Cougars look to continue their assent with a tough match at UNC Greensboro on Wednesday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Complex.
