The College of Charleston MLK Challenge is back! On January 17, 2011 we will honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by sending teams of students out into the community to complete a “challenge” project to benefit the Charleston community. MLK Challenge kicks off at the Stern Center Ballroom at 9:00 a.m.
MLK Challenge is comprised of 15 teams with about 10 students in each team. Teams are provided with only $75 and a van and they have six hours to complete a service project with a local community organization. As team advisors for the challenge projects, faculty and staff participate by driving a passenger van, facilitating student problem solving and reflection, and serving alongside the students to help complete the project.
Since the first MLK Challenge in 2003, student teams have served their community by developing creative solutions to a range of needs. Past projects have included painting the playground of a daycare for underserved children, weatherizing local homes to help low income families reduce their energy costs, and providing fire safety awareness outreach.
While project site specifics are not revealed until MLK Day, students, faculty, and staff can look forward to new and difficult Challenge projects this year. Are you up to the Challenge?
