College of Charleston students, faculty, and alumni earned eight “Best of Charleston 2011” titles as part of the Charleston City Paper’s annual review.
Basektball standout Andrew Goudelock ‘11 was named “Best Local Athlete.” Goudelock broke the College’s all-time scoring record with 2,407 points (as of March 2, 2011) and was named the 2011 SoCon Player of the Year. This season he has averaged 23 points per game – the fourth highest in the nation.
College of Charleston’s School of the Arts nabbed five “Best Of” titles with music faculty member Quentin Baxter leading the way with his Quentin Baxter Band earning their second straight “Best Jazz Band” award.
Arts Management instructor and Hootie and the Blowfish band member Mark Bryan was named “Best Rock Professor.” The City Paper staff says, “The course is for students who have an interest in understanding the workings of the music industry and the process involved in producing music.” Watch Bryan’s class in this 2009 video.
Theatre major Young Stowe ’14 was named the “Best Breakthrough Performance.” The City Paper staff says, “The excitement of seeing a great performance is always doubled when that performance gets us excited about the future. Young Stowe, who played Artful Dodger in Village Playhouse’s Oliver Twist last November, makes us wonder what is next for the young actor. In Twist, Stowe didn’t just steal scenes, he annexed them.”
The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art organized the “bluesphere Earth Art Expo,” which was named the “Best Organically-Grown Expo.” They also featured an exhibit by Nick Cave, for which he earned “Best Fashion Statement.”
Alumna Heather Speizman ‘99 is the co-owner of Bottles ‘n Brushes, which was named “Best Art Instruction.” Watch Speizman in a video featuring the alumni named 2009 Charleston Forty Under 40.
Finally, the College’s Quidditch team, which is ranked No. 12 in the nation, was named “Best Indication that College Kids Have Way Too Much Time on Their Hands.” Watch this video of the Quidditch team and decide for yourself!
