The College of Charleston’s 31st Annual Lowcountry Regional Science and Engineering Fair will be held on March 21, 2011 at Trident Technical College’s The College Center. More than 160 students in grades 5 – 12 have been selected to compete based on their performance at area school fairs. The first round of judging will begin at 3:00 p.m. and end at 6:00 p.m.

The Lowcountry Regional Science and Engineering Fair is one of seven regional fairs in S.C. and is open to students in Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester, and Georgetown counties. The fair’s overall winners will advance to the Broadcom MASTERS Competition and Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.

The Awards Ceremony will be held Friday, March 25, 2011 at 6:30 pm in the College of Charleston’s Physician’s Auditorium in the Hollings Science Center.

“The purpose of the Lowcountry Regional Science and Engineering Fair is to nurture and stimulate interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics by recognizing and rewarding students for their diligent work,” says Starr Jordan, director of Lowcountry Hall of Science and Math. “Science fair projects enable students to refine their science process skills, such as observing, inferring, communicating, etc. These skills are essential in developing informed, thinking citizens.”

The Lowcountry Regional Science and Engineering Fair is sponsored by the College of Charleston’s School of Sciences and Mathematics and Lowcountry Hall of Science and Math, Patriots Point Foundation Cold War Submarine Memorial Fund, and a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
