College of Charleston Hispanic Studies Professor Mark Del Mastro has been elected “Miembro Correspondiente” (Correspondent Member) of the North American Academy of the Spanish Language (ANLE). This appointment/honor is bestowed upon a select few in the field who have distinguished themselves professionally and internationally in supporting the mission of the ANLE, which is primarily the promotion of the Spanish language. Del Mastro is one of just 20 new appointees in 2011 internationally, and he is the first ever from South Carolina.

“Being the first-ever appointee from S.C. is especially gratifying,” says Del Mastro, chair of the Department of Hispanic Studies. “My appointment to the ranks of so many highly respected, internationally renowned Hispanists is incredibly humbling, to say the least. But the most important aspect of this recognition is the statement it makes about all of our accomplished scholars in the College’s Hispanic Studies Department. We have an exceptional undergraduate program in Hispanic Studies, and I believe my recognition is really one that also recognizes the activities of a fantastic department and program.”

Founded in 1973, the ANLE is also a member of the 22 Associations of the Spanish Language Academies of the Spanish Royal Academy which was established in 1713 in Madrid, Spain. The ANLE is headquartered in New York City, and it has appointed “Correspondent Members” throughout the world.
