Pioneering coral reef research in Bali, Indonesia, has earned College of Charleston biology professor Phillip Dustan the Ralph Brown Expedition Award, the college recently announced.

Dustan will share the award with two other scientists, Orla Doherty and Abigail Alling. Each is a member of the Biosphere Foundation, which has been working with the people of Bali to protect coral reef in the region.

Dustan was one of the first scientists to use satellite imagery to map coral reefs off the Florida coast. He is working with the foundation to map other reefs from space.
