The College of Charleston’s inaugural Master of Business Administration (MBA) class leaves June 13, 2011 for their study abroad experience in China. The students will spend two weeks there as part of a requirement of the accelerated program that focuses on incorporating global perspectives and positioning graduates for career opportunities in the global marketplace.
“Our MBA curriculum was specifically designed to reflect the reality of today’s global business environment,” says Alan T. Shao, dean of the School of Business. “Everything we do in our program has an international business component to it.”
While in China, the class of 23 students will visit Beijing, Suzhou, Chengdu, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. While in Beijing, they will meet with the College’s newest alumni chapter, tour an international company, and visit the Great Wall of China. In Suzhou and Chengdu they will meet with the South Carolina Department of Commerce Asia Business Manager, as well as visiting Charleston-based AstenJohnson Corporation in the Integrated Free Trade Zone. The students will also visit the Port of Shanghai, a global shipping company and the Asia-America Chamber of Commerce. They’ll round out their with a visit to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
When the students return from China on June 25, 2011, they will take a capstone course before completing the 13-month MBA program in August. A celebration will be held and the graduates will cross the stage at the Winter Commencement ceremony on Saturday, December 17, 2011.
The next MBA program will begin in July with the pre-term bootcamp before the actual program begins in August with about 30 students. Students will have the opportunity to focus on finance, marketing, or revenue management in the hospitality and tourism industry. Applications for the 2012-13 class will be accepted starting in October 2011.
