The College of Charleston’s Office of Student Life will participate in the National Roll Call, recognizing the 10th Veterans Day since the September 11, 2001. This is part of the various activities during the week of Veterans Day to honor those who have served and still serve to preserve our freedom.

On November 11, a small ceremony honoring those who have given their life for their country will take place on Rivers Green, beginning at 1:30p.m. Several staff members will read the 89 names of residents of South Carolina who have died since 9/11, a small portion of the 6,500 who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. Over 180 colleges and universities in all 50 states and Washington D.C. will observe one minute of silence at 2:00p.m. which will occur during the reading of the names.

Throughout the week of November 7-13, student, faculty and staff can stop by the Stern Student Center to view the names of Military Veterans who currently work or attend the College of Charleston.  Note cards are available to leave messages for veterans, or just a general thank you for serving. These will be distributed to the campus veterans. You can also leave a message for troops currently serving overseas and they will be sent to the soldiers through Soldier’s Angels. Soldier’s Angels, a non-profit organization providing comfort and support to soldiers and their families, who focus on providing for those soldiers who may not have a support system back home.

During the week, a donation box will be located in the Stern Center for those who would like to send items to soldiers serving overseas. These items will be donated to a specific unit, which will be assigned at a later date but sent in time for the holidays.

The College of Charleston is one of four colleges in South Carolina participating in the roll, including Clemson, Winthrop and Coastal Carolina.
