The College of Charleston’s School of Business will partner with Junior Achievement of Coastal South Carolina to host a free forum for high-school students to encourage entrepreneurial thinking, educate on financial literacy, and participate in a competitive online business simulation.

The December 15, 2011 forum is free for the first 240 high school registrants at jacoastalsc@org.

It will be held in the College of Charleston Beatty Center starting at 9:30 a.m.

School counselors, teachers and students are all excited about this new event.  Les Turner, a School Counselor at West Ashley High School believes that, “a forum like this is so great for our high school students because it connects them to the next phase in their lives.  There is a lot of mystery about college and careers and they might think that things will just happen for them.  No, high school students need to take steps to make things happen, and this is a excellent opportunity for students to connect with others in the career field of their choice.”

First Federal Bank will provide financial experts to teach lessons and lead activities regarding personal finance. Local entrepreneurs will also be present to aid in teaching the high-school students entrepreneurial skills, share their stories, and answer questions to prepare the students for a successful future as they continue their education. Chick-Fil-A also sponsors the event by providing food for the teachers, counselors, students, and volunteers.

Students are also participating in a competitive online simulation powered by JA Titan geared at teaching the nuances of running a global business in a competitive, high-tech marketplace. Students have complete control of managing and operating their own virtual business and making key decisions. At the end of the event, prizes will be awarded to the team that wins the business simulation. Students have had the opportunity to practice the simulation in preparation for today’s competition.
