In honor of National AmeriCorps Week, the College of Charleston is recognizing the more than 60 students, alumni, faculty and staff who have served or are serving in the national service program.

There are 20 College alumni or staff members that are currently serving in the AmeriCorps, including two who are serving at the College of Charleston. Laura Mewbourn is working in the Center for Civic Engagement and Andrea DeSantis is working in the Honors College for the Literacy Outreach Initiative. Our alumni are currently serving in Colorado, Louisiana, Vermont, Massachusetts, Kentucky, California, Ohio, and in the Charleston area.

College alumni that have served in the AmeriCorps come from all different majors including psychology, dance, business administration, communication, political science, Spanish, mathematic, hospitality and tourism management, history, biology, education  and religious studies. Many have worked with Teach for America, while others have worked for the USDA doing research, in non-profit organizations like the Boys and Girls Clubs and United Way, and in classrooms across the nation.

AmeriCorps is made up of three main programs: AmeriCorps State and National, AmeriCorps VISTA, and AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) and each year more than 75,000 adults across the nation tackle America’s toughest problems in these areas: disaster services, economic opportunity, education, environmental stewardship, healthy futures, veterans and military families.
