The College of Charleston has received a 2012 Historic Preservation Honor Award from the Palmetto Trust for Historic Preservation for its restoration of Randolph Hall, Porter’s Lodge, and Towell Library. Established in 1995, the Honor Award recognizes successful and exemplary historic preservation projects in South Carolina.
Michael Bedenbaugh, Executive Director of the Palmetto Trust, presented the award to College President George Benson at the College’s Board of Trustees meeting on April 20, 2012.
“We are honored to receive this award. These three buildings along with the Cistern Yard are the heart and soul of our campus,” Benson said. “As Charleston’s largest historic preservationist, the College is proud to preserve and protect these national treasures and all of our many historic buildings.”
The College completed the restoration project in Spring 2011. The $4.4 million project was primarily funded by the South Carolina General Assembly.
This is the second honor that the College has received in recognition of the restoration project. In February 2012, the College received three Carolopolis Awards from the Preservation Society of Charleston – one award for each building.
The Historic Preservation Awards are sponsored by the Palmetto Trust for Historic Preservation, the S.C. Department of Archives and History, and the Office of the Governor. The awards recognize exceptional accomplishments in the preservation, rehabilitation, and interpretation of South Carolina’s architectural and cultural heritage.
