The College of Charleston continues to have a bright presence at the 2012 London Olympic Games as two of its own compete on the international stage among the world’s best.

Senior sailor Juan Maegli (Guatemala City, Guatemala) is currently fourth overall in the Men’s Laser Class competition after a seventh-place finish in Race 3 and a 13th-place finish in Race 4 on Weymouth Harbour in Weymouth, England. He positioned himself well on the first day of racing with a first-place finish in Race 1 beating out the likes of world No. 1 and current leader Tom Slingsby of Australia.

Maegli ’13 is gunning to become the first Guatemalan Olympian to medal and would join the ranks of former College of Charleston sailing alumni who have won silver medals in past Games including Jim Brady (’86) in the Soling Class in Barcelona in 1992 and Cougar Athletics Hall of Famer John Lovell (’90) in the Tornado Class in Beijing in 2008. Maegli will compete tomorrow in Races 5 and 6 scheduled for 2:10 a.m. (ET) – 7:10 a.m. (Local Time) and 4:40 a.m. (ET) – 9:40 a.m. (Local Time) respectively.

Meanwhile, senior point guard Andrew Lawrence (London, England) played significant minutes in the second half of play as Great Britain fell to Brazil, 67-62, on Tuesday at The Basketball Arena located in the Olympic Park. He contributed one rebound and one assist for Team GB. Lawrence also saw action in both halves against Russia in the team’s Olympic opener on Monday.

Great Britain, who is 0-2 in Pool B and making only its second appearance at the Olympic Games next to 1948, will take on Australia on Thursday, Aug. 2 at 3 p.m. (ET) – 8 p.m. (Local Time).
