The College of Charleston announces a new undergraduate major in the School of Education, Health and Human Performance and the School of Languages, Cultures, and World Affairs. Beginning in summer 2013, students will be able to earn a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Language Education. Students earning this degree plan to become foreign language teachers in French, German, Latin, or Spanish. In order to become certified to teach, they are required to have coursework in both their language major and education.

Dean Frances C. Welch of the School of Education, Health and Human Performance, said, ““By creating this new major, we’re able to better meet the growing demands for foreign language teachers in our public school systems, while also recognizing the significant investment our students have made in completing this specialized curriculum.”

Associate Professor Shawn Morrison, who is also the associate dean of the School of Languages, Cultures, and World Affairs, said of the new major, “Students complete extra work to gain this degree they are really earning two majors.”

Students accomplish a 30-hour Foreign Language Education program. Prior to the declaration of the major, teacher education candidates interested in teaching a foreign language could only become certified for secondary education with a minor in addition to their Bachelors of Arts in their chosen language.

With this new degree, College students wishing to teach a foreign language, receive two degrees, one in their language area and one in education.
