The College of Charleston’s sailing team captured its fourth coed national championship this May during three days of racing in St. Petersburg, Fla. The Cougars bested 17 other teams, including runner-up Georgetown University, to win the ICSA/Gill Co-Ed National Championship.
“To win the coed national championship three times in the last eight years is impressive,” Head Coach Ward Cromwell says. “It was truly a group effort. We sailed really well the last three days. The conditions were windy and choppy, making for really long courses. But they were able to put the boat through the water well and we had no major errors.”
Other highlights from the season included senior Juan Maegli, a 2012 London Olympian in the Laser Class, being named the 2013 Everett B. Morris College Sailor of the Year. Several other Cougars earned All-America honors: Ben Spector ’13 (ICSA Honorable Mention Coed), Alicia Blumenthal (ICSA Crew) and Cory DeCollibus ’13 (ICSA Crew).
