To commemorate one of the greatest presidential speeches in our nation’s history, the College of Charleston’s Bully Pulpit Series and the Jubilee Project will present a panel discussion celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the Gettysburg Address.
The program will be held on November 11, 2013 in Alumni Hall starting at 4:00 p.m.
The Panel Members will include:
· Congressman James E. Clyburn– As Assistant Democratic Leader in the 113th Congress, the number three Democrat in the House, Clyburn is the leadership liaison to the Appropriations Committee and one of the Democratic Caucus’ primary liaisons to the White House.
· Vernon Burton, Ph.D. – Professor Burton joined Clemson University in 2010. He is a Professor of History and the Director of the Clemson Cyberinstitute.
· Brian McGee, Ph.D. – McGee is chief of staff and senior vice president for executive administration in the College of Charleston’s Office of the President. He previously served as chair of the Department of Communication.
Panelist will discuss the values and democracy so succinctly laid out 150 years ago by President Abraham Lincoln in his address at Gettysburg. Following panelist remarks, audience members will have the opportunity to participate in a brief question and answer session.
An effort of the College’s Department of Communication, The Bully Pulpit Series is a non-partisan political event series that appreciates and celebrates political
communication. By providing a forum for political discourse and engagement, The Bully Pulpit Series serves students, faculty, staff and community members through
its educational mission.
The Jubilee Project is a collaborative academic and cultural project extending across the College and City of Charleston, the Carolina Lowcountry, and beyond. The project celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, the 50th anniversary of the desegregation of public education in South Carolina, and commemorates other key events both of 1863 and of the Civil Rights movement in 1963.
