Nationally known economist and writer Virginia Postrel will share her views on the intersection of culture and commerce at the College of Charleston on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at 7 p.m. in the Beatty Center. Postrel’s presentation, entitled, Meaning and Value in Commercial Culture, is sponsored by the Initiative for Public Choice and Market Processes in the School of Business. This free event is open to the public.

Postrel’s work spans a broad range of topics, from social science to fashion and her most recent book, The Power of Glamour: Longing and the Art of Visual Persuasion was published in November by Simon & Schuster. Her previous books are The Substance of Style (2003) and The Future and Its Enemies (1998). She is a regular columnist for Bloomberg View.

Postrel has also contributed to The New York Times as an economics columnist and been an editor for The Atlantic, and Forbes magazine.  Previous speaking engagements include corporate venues such as Nike, Proctor & Gamble, Target, Liz Claiborne, Sony and IDEO.

Postrel also spent an hour with students and faculty interested in discussing people’s attraction to glamourous imagry. Philosophy Professor Jennifer Baker says, “I want to learn why Charleston is glamorous (the homes, the dress, the manners). I’m interested in Postel’s theory that glamour isn’t a formula, but something we experience.”
