Growth and economic development are concerns in every country and every city. The College of Charleston’s School of Business’ Initiative for Public Choice & Market Process will present a screening of the public television documentary Economic Freedom in Action: Changing Lives, along with a Q&A following the documentary. The event is free and open to the public and will be held on January 29, 2014 from 7 until 9 p.m. in the Beatty Center at the College of Charleston (5 Liberty St.).
“This documentary really shows that economic freedom is improving in less developed countries, yet declining in the U.S.,” explains Economics Professor Peter Calcagno, director of the IPCMP. “This documentary suggests that the one key to economic prosperity is entrepreneurship, and that economic freedom is essential to the development of entrepreneurship. Anyone interested in the areas of economic growth, development, globalization and freedom will find it interesting.”
Economist Steve Horwitz from St. Lawrence University and the Fraser Institute will lead the discussion and Q&A following the documentary. He is the author of two books, Microfoundations and Macroeconomics: An Austrian Perspective (Routledge, 2000) and Monetary Evolution, Free Banking, and Economic Order (Westview, 1992), and he has written extensively on Austrian economics, Hayekian political economy, monetary theory and history, and macroeconomics.
Economic Freedom in Action: Changing Lives is a new one-hour public television documentary that travels the globe to profile inspiring entrepreneurs from nations that have increased economic freedom for their citizens. From Zambia to South Korea, from Slovakia to Chile, this rise in economic freedom has led to increased prosperity and longevity, allowing more people to rise out of poverty and build positive futures for themselves and their children. Hosted by noted Swedish author, economist and commentator Johan Norberg, Economic Freedom in Action explores the very definition of economic freedom. By reviewing and explaining the findings of the latest Fraser Institute Economic Freedom of the World Annual Report, the program reveals — in personal and dramatic terms — the impact of increased economic freedom on the lives of ordinary citizens across the globe.
This event is sponsored by the Free to Choose Network and the Initiative for Public Choice and Market Process.
