By 2019, the College of Charleston is committed to having at least 48 percent of its graduating students participate in a study abroad experience, with an emphasis on first-generation college students. The College joins more than 150 other universities making a commitment as part of the Institute of International Education (IIE)’s Generation Study Abroad initiative.

Study Abroad 1“When students study abroad, they are more likely to remain at the College to earn their degree,” explains Andrew Sobiesuo, Ph.D., director of the Center for International Education. “They step outside their comfort zone, which helps them to adjust to life on campus, and learn how to succeed.”

According to IIE, fewer than 10 percent of all U.S. college students study abroad at some point in their academic career. At the College of Charleston, about 30 percent of graduating seniors study abroad, and that number has been growing by about nine percent each year.

In addition to increasing the total number of students studying abroad, Sobiesuo would like to increase the participation of first-generation college students by 10 percent. These students, enrolled in the ROAR Program (Reach-Overcome-Achieve-Results), have shown an interest in studying abroad, but very few actually participate because of financial or family limitations.

“I strongly believe we can attain these goals,” says Sobiesuo. “We plan to provide additional guidance and education to these students, as well as designate $10,000 in existing scholarship funds to support them. When a student combines their federal and state financial aid with one of these scholarships, it may be the same cost as a semester on campus.”

The College of Charleston offers more than $200,000 in scholarships for students studying abroad. About 85 percent of students who apply receive a scholarship. The criteria is based on financial need and academic merit.

About IIE’s Generation Study Abroad Initiative

Leading up to IIE’s centennial celebration in 2019, Generation Study Abroad will engage educators at all levels and stakeholders in the public and private sectors to drive meaningful, innovative action to increase the number of U.S. students who have the opportunity to gain international experience through academic study abroad programs, as well as internships, service learning and non-credit educational experiences. Building on its nearly 100-year commitment to study abroad, IIE has committed $2 million of its own funds to this initiative over the next 5 years.
