Professors at the College of Charleston will be spending part of their summer helping to engage third through eighth graders in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) activities.
The Summer STEAM Institute is a partnership between Engaging Creative Minds and the Lowcountry Hall for Science and Math, which is housed at the College of Charleston. Summer STEAM runs from June 16 through July 25, 2014 and themes change each week.
School of the Arts dance faulty members Erin Leigh and Kristin Alexander will be instructing parts of the camp. School of Sciences and Mathematics professors will be designing some of the content and activities. Wendy Cory (chemistry) will create content around chemical reactions, Cynthia Hall (Lowcountry Hall of Science and Math) will focus on climate change, Jason Howell (math) will look at mathematical beauty in nature, Gardner Marshall (physics) is creating content around force, motion and superheroes, and Cassandra Runyon (geology) will focus on space themes.
Summer STEAM is designed for creative and energetic students in grades 3-8 who want to spend their summer engaged in unique learning experiences that foster creativity and problem solving alongside local artists, cultural organizations, and professionals in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. No experience necessary! Camp hours are 8:30-4:00 with breakfast, lunch and healthy snacks included in the price each day. Cost is $200 per week for individual weeks or $175 per week if registering for 3 or more weeks.
