College of Charleston baseball head coach Monte Lee has signed an eight-year, $193,000 per year contract extension and will remain in Charleston.
Lee recently interviewed for the head coaching position at Arizona State University, a program that has won five national championships and is considered one of the nation’s most storied programs. On Tuesday, ASU tabbed Indiana’s Tracy Smith as its next head coach.
In his six seasons at the College, Lee has posted a record of 231-130 with three trips to the NCAA Tournament, including a championship in the 2014 Gainesville Regional and a trip to the 2014 Lubbock Super Regional. He led Charleston to a CAA Tournament championship in 2014 and a Southern Conference regular season championship in 2012. His career winning percentage of .639 currently ranks 22nd among all active NCAA D-I coaches.
A graduate of the College of Charleston, Lee played baseball for the Cougars and became Charleston’s first position player to be drafted in the MLB Draft. In 2004, he was part of the inaugural class inducted into the College of Charleston Baseball Wall of Fame.
Lee joined the Cougars in 2009 after spending the six seasons as an assistant at South Carolina under head coach Ray Tanner. He served as the Gamecocks’ recruiting coordinator in his last season.
In December of 2012, Lee was named one of Baseball America’s Top 10 Head Coaches Under 40 in all of college baseball. He was also named to Perfect Game’s Top 10 Rising Head Coaches list. In 2014, he reached his 200th career win at College of Charleston, becoming the fastest CofC coach to reach that milestone.
