Provost George Hynd announced today that he will leave the College of Charleston to become the new president of Oakland University in Michigan.
Hynd was named provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the College of Charleston in January 2010. He came to the College from Arizona State University, where he was the senior vice provost for education and innovation, foundation professor of psychology and dean and director of the Mary Lou Fulton Institute and Graduate School of Education.
During his time at the College of Charleston, Hynd is credited with successfully creating new undergraduate and graduate degree programs in African American Studies, Exercise Science, Archeology, Public Administration, Finance and a degree completion program aimed at adult learners. He also was instrumental in expanding enrollment recruitment efforts to under-represented and first generation students.

Hynd’s last day at the College of Charleston will be August 15, 2014.
