The College of Charleston School of Business Initiative for Public Choice and Market Process will present a lecture by Timur Kuran, professor of economics and political science and Gorter Family Professor of Islamic Studies at Duke University.
The event – part of the initiative’s BB&T Free Market Process Speaker Series – takes place at 6 p.m. on Sept. 30, 2014, in the Beatty Center’s Wells Fargo Auditorium.
Kuran will discuss the impact of the Middle East’s traditional institutions on poor political performance, as measured by democratization and human liberties. A Q&A session will follow the presentation. The event is free and open to the campus community and the public. It is co-sponsored by the Initiative for Public Choice and Market Process and the Bastiat Society.
Kuran’s research focuses on social change, including the evolution of preferences and institutions, and the economic history and thought of the Middle East.
He graduated from Robert Academy in Istanbul in 1973 and went on to study economics at Princeton University (AB 1977) and Stanford University (Ph.D. 1982).
Between 1982 and 2007 he taught at the University of Southern California. He was also a member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, the John Olin Visiting Professor at the Graduate School of Business, University of Chicago, and a visiting professor of economics at Stanford University.
