After claiming both the regular season and CAA Tournament titles in 2013, College of Charleston volleyball opens their 2014 conference slate September 26 at TD Arena, when the Cougars play host to the Towson Tigers.
The College heads in to the match on the heels of a difficult 1-2 showing at the highly-competitive SMU Classic in Dallas, Texas, where CofC fell to New Mexico and the hosts, Southern Methodist, before beating Houston Baptist in the tournament finale. Despite having lost three of their last four, the Cougars have shown flashes of their potential, including a tournament title two weeks ago at the home-hosted CofC Classic.
Leading the way for The College offensively is the triumvirate of junior team captain Melissa Morello (3.32 k/set), returning CAA Offensive Player of the Week Cara Howley (3.29 k/set), and preseason all-conference selection Sloane White (2.39 k/set). White was stellar in Dallas, hitting at a .455 clip against Houston Baptist and garnering all-tournament team honors. White’s .295 hitting percentage through CofC’s opening 15 games ranks eighth in the conference. Returning CAA setter of the year, Kallie McKown, has also been strong for the Cougars again this season, averaging 6.16 assists/game (5th best in the CAA). Senior libero Andi Zbojniewicz and Morello have been sharing the defensive responsibilities, combining for 436 digs on the season (3.70 digs/set).
