Coming off its second place finish in the nation a year ago, the College of Charleston equestrian team opened its 2014-15 season with a dominant, first-place finish at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) show hosted by Georgia Southern.
Following weeks of unrelenting rain and limited practice time, the national runners-up went into this weekend’s competition relying on the talent of new recruits and the seasoned experience of upperclassman.
Last season, The College had a disappointing third-place finish at the season opener that was quickly rectified by a string of five first-place finishes to claim the Zone 5 Region 3 championship before placing second out of 457 IHSA teams nationally.
The day started out with triple first place finishes in the over fences classes. Senior Eliza Hay started the day with a first place finish in the Open Equitation over fences. Freshman Emily Alvarez made her collegiate debut in the Intermediate Equitation over fences and brought home the second win of the day for the College. National Champion Victoria Bauer closed out the Novice Equitation over fences with a third win for the College, giving the Cougars a perfect score of 21 points to begin the afternoon.
