College of Charleston Friends of the Library (FOL) will host S.C. Gwynne, author of “Rebel Yell: The Violence, Passion, and Redemption of Stonewall Jackson,” for the FOL’s Fall 2014 Authors’ Series.
The event takes place at 6 p.m. on Oct. 1, 2014, in Alumni Hall, Randolph Hall.
Gwynne is the author of several books, including “Selling Money,” about his years as an international banker, and “Outlaw Bank,” about the $20 billion BCCI bank fraud.
Gwynne spent most of his career as a journalist, including stints with Time as bureau chief, national correspondent, and senior editor, and with Texas Monthly as executive editor.
Gwynne’s first historical work, “Empire of the Summer Moon,” about Quanah Parker and the legendary Comanche tribe, was a finalist for both the Pulitzer Prize and a National Book Critic’s Circle Award and won both the prestigious Texas and Oklahoma Book Awards.
In “Rebel Yell,” Gwynne delves deep into Jackson’s private life — the death of his parents at a young age; the loss of his young, beloved first wife; his regimented personal habits — while also detailing his magnificent 24-month career during the Civil War.
“The book is the result of a lifelong interest in the Civil War and particularly in Jackson, whom I consider one of its most compelling characters,” Gwynne writes on his website. “The book is really about transformation: how an unpopular and highly eccentric college physics professor becomes, in the space of fourteen months, the most famous military figure in the western world.”
Following the lecture, Gwynne will take part in a book signing. Books will be on sale the night of the event.
