In honor of the release of the College of Charleston Traditions Book to junior students, here are 5 (free!) tasks, traditions and challenges you must complete before graduation to truly call yourself a Cougar.
1. Snap a selfie with a $100 thousand bird.
The Marlene and Nathan Addlestone Library’s (205 Calhoun St.) Special Collections boasts an unparalleled collection of bird prints by John James Audubon, the most famous bird painter of all time. His prints range in value from a few-hundred to a few-hundred-thousand dollars, so don’t miss your chance to pose with an Audubon pelican – or heron, turkey or swan.
2. Check out the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture.
The Avery Research Center (125 Bull St.), once the Avery Normal Institute and the first free secondary school for African Americans in Charleston, now houses the study of African American traditions and cultures along with cultural and historical exhibitions. Come to see the historical and contemporary books, art and objects unique to the College.
3. Celebrate Commencement at A Charleston Affair.
Starting your senior year, you’re eligible to buy two tickets to A Charleston Affair – the biggest party of the year at the College of Charleston. The event takes place a few days before commencement in a transformed Cistern Yard, complete with chandeliers hung from the oaks, and dancing and live music throughout campus.
4. Catch a golden snitch.
The College’s Quidditch team is nationally competitive (it was ranked no. 12 worldwide in 2010), and it practices on or near campus on Rivers Green and Marion Square. Watch our skilled team play in a match or practice and get swept away with the Muggle-version of this magical sport.
5. Show your Cougar pride at a basketball game.
The men’s and women’s basketball seasons begin in November and end in April, so you have plenty of time to catch a home game before you cross the Cistern for commencement. Wear your best maroon gear (face paint optional) and cheer from the student section of the TD Arena – enjoy the seating there while you can!
