There is an increased local and state interest in reversing the summer learning loss, reducing the achievement gap and increasing student achievement. On December 5, 2014, the College of Charleston School of Education, Health, and Human Performance will host a briefing with nationally-recognized education leaders from 10-11:45 a.m. in the Alumni Center (86 Wentworth St.).

Speakers include Eddie Wilson, Director of Operations, Student Support Services for Pittsburgh Public Schools; Chris Smith, Director of After School and Beyond Boston; and Gigi Antoni, Executive Director of Big Thought Dallas. These experts will discuss strategies for utilizing summer and afterschool learning opportunities and partnerships to help students beat the odds.

“Hosting this briefing for several dozen local and state leaders offers the potential to shift the conversation and activity around student learning and achievement. This is a rare opportunity to connect leaders from different educational, civic and business organizations with national experts to discuss strategies that can truly impact student success,” says Fran Welch, the dean of the School of Education, Health, and Human Performance at the College of Charleston. “The School is proud to partner with other organizations to host this important briefing that will impact school districts and educational agencies across the state.”

The event is a partnership between the College of Charleston School of Education, Health, and Human Performance in partnership with the National After School and Community Learning Network and Engaging Creative Minds.
