Three former and current College of Charleston sailors medaled and competed at the Central American and Caribbean Games held on Nov. 23-29 in Veracruz, Mexico.
The sailing competition took place at Camino Real Beach, Veramar Marina and Anton Lizardo Herioic Navy School.
Former two-time ICSA All-American, two-time Olympian and 2013 College Sailor of the Year Juan Maegli (Guatemala City, Guatemala) won Gold in the Laser class, while current sophomore Enrique Arathoon (Guatemala City, Guatemala) claimed Bronze in the same event.
Sophomore Irene Abascal (Guatemala City, Guatemala) also won a Bronze medal with skipper Jason Hess in the Hobie 16 class.
“This speaks highly to the depth of our program even outside of the college sailing arena,” CofC Director of Sailing Greg Fisher said. “Many of the Central and South American Olympic sailors race in these games as they prepare for the Olympic Games (in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2016).”
Held every four years, the Games are one of the most important sports events in the Central American and Caribbean region. There were competitions in 36 sports, 12 of which lead to the qualification for the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada.
