When winter chills seem inescapable, we all long for something hot. Maybe a cocoa sounds nice. Even better, a cocoa by a roaring fire. Or, best of all, some cocoa, a fire and a hot and steamy book in one’s hands.
If you’re in the mood for a good love story, know that a handful of College of Charleston alums and one College employee have penned some fine romance novels over the last decade. We’ll warn you that these are not your mother’s romance novels, as the pages aren’t filled with helpless women just waiting for the right man to sweep them off their feet. No, these books feature men and women on equal footing. When these mates find love, one partner doesn’t save the other, but rather they save each other.
Among the College-affiliated romance writers you might want to give a try:
- Catherine Woods Mann ‘85– A Florida-based writer whose books often feature military or animal themes. Her books include Shelter Me, Hot Zone, and Taking Cover.
- Kieran Wray Kramer ’85– A South Carolina author whose books have featured both Southern gals and European royalty. Her titles include: Sweet Talk Me, When Harry Met Molly, and You’re So Fine.
- Christine Ferrell Edwards ’98– A Connecticut-based author whose steamy tales often feature exotic locations and alpha males who meet their match in sexy, strong-willed women. Her books include Captured in Croatia and Charleston Past Midnight.
- Savannah Frierson– This Harvard grad works at the College’s Avery Research Center for African-American History and Culture. Her books, which include Being Plumville, Loose, and Reconstructing Jada Channing, often examine unconventional romances, such as mixed-race relationships and love between people with a significant age gap.
