The College of Charleston women’s golf team took team honors with a first-place finish on the final day of the 2015 Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort.
It was the first time that CofC has won the event, always one of the largest collegiate tournaments in the country, after hosting it for seven years. It was the 21st career win for head coach Jamie Futrell, sixth in the last two years and second of the season after the Cougars won the CSU Wendy’s Invitational this October. CofC played with the top 20 teams of the tournament at the Osprey Point golf course and recorded a three-day score of 886 (+22) which was the second-lowest 54-hold score in tournament history. North Florida finished second with a three-round score of 891 (+27) and Stetson finished in third with a three-round score of 897 (+33).
Jessica Welch of Jacksonville claimed individual medalist honors by shooting a 69 today for a three-round total of 213 (-3). Melania Bajo Geijo from Jacksonville State finished in second place individually after shooting a 68 today for a three-round total of 215 (-1). Mary Dawson of North Florida, Andrea Slane of Delaware and Sunna Vidisdottir of Elon tied for third place, shooting even-par 216.
The story of the day for CofC was senior C.C. Buford (San Antonio, Texas) shooting a beautiful five-birdie 68 which matched the career low that she set this fall at the Palmetto Intercollegiate at the Turtle Point golf course, also on Kiawah Island. Buford finished in a tie for 6th place with a three-round score of 217 (+1).Next up for the Cougars is the home-hosted Briar’s Creek Invitational on March 23-24 at the Golf Club at Briar’s Creek on Johns Island, S.C.
