Demolition of Physicians Memorial Auditorium has begun. Measures are being taken to minimize intrusion to the campus, and – to reduce interruption to students, staff and visitors – the work is scheduled to start next week and wrap up by mid-September 2015, with the complete removal of the auditorium finishing in October 2015.
The 9,500-square-foot Physicians Auditorium was built in 1972 as part of the project that built the original, north half of the Rita Liddy Hollings Science Center. The building was slated for demolition as a result of its overall disrepair. The demolition of the auditorium will create additional space for the School of Sciences and Mathematics and enable the development of a modern, flexible-use auditorium.
The removal of the auditorium is one of the first phases of the overall renovation of the Hollings Science Center, with which it shares its west wall. The plans for the new, multi-floor building include subdividable space on the first floor, classrooms and offices on the second and third floors and a more accessible astronomy deck and telescope dome on the roof. The work will start this fall and the building is scheduled to be ready for use in the summer of 2017.
