CougarMade is an occasional series featuring the handiwork of talented College of Charleston alumni.
Ben D’Allesandro ’05 is a man of many talents. He’s a good father to two kids, an excellent juggler, and a natural atop a unicycle.
D’Allesandro is at his most impressive, however, when he’s making pizza.
For nearly a decade he and his brother Nick have owned and operated D’Allesandro’s Pizza at the corner of St. Philip and Bogard streets in downtown Charleston.
In a crowded Charleston pizza market, D’Allesandro’s stands out for its funky vibe and top-notch food. Among their best-sellers: the Get Gnarly pizza, featuring balsamic vinegar-marinated chicken on a pie with mozzarella, spinach and blue cheese crumbles. Another fan favorite: the Beetnick, which features mozzarella, goat cheese, bacon, golden beets and rosemary. Mmmmmmm……
Hungry yet? If so, maybe you can stomach the pizza cake, a special order from the pizzeria.
D’Allesandros has employed many, many Cougars since opening in the Elliotborough neighborhood in 2006. Scores more have dined there, whether for lunch, dinner, or a midnight snack. And there’s always plenty of College students in attendance at the annual block party hosted by the pizzeria.
Why does everyone keep coming back? The D’Allesandro brothers have an answer, and they tend not to overthink their success:
“We keep it simple. Our philosophy: If the pizza is good and the beer is cold, people will come.”
