The College of Charleston women’s basketball team picked up the start to the season they were looking for Friday, pulling away from the Houston Cougars (0-1) with a 55-48 win.

Junior Canyon Barry scored a career-high 31 points to lead College of Charleston to a 74-54 rout of South Carolina State on Friday night before a crowd of 4,024 fans at TD Arena.


 

The College of Charleston 2015-16 basketball campaigns start tonight, Nov. 13, 2015, when the women’s team takes on the University of Houston and the men battle South Carolina State University.

The women tip off at 4 p.m. and the men take the court at 7 p.m. Both games will be in the College’s TD Arena at 301 Meeting St.

basketballfansCollege of Charleston Athletics will welcome and honor the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church community during the doubleheader. The Cougars will hold a moment of silence prior to tip-off in remembrance of the victims, survivors and members of Mother Emanuel AME Church.

Vanessa Thomas-Jackson, a member of the Emanuel AME Church’s choir, will sing the national anthem.

To honor the victims and survivors of the Emanuel AME Church tragedy, the College of Charleston women will wear a blue patch embroidered with a palmetto tree and nine doves on their jerseys for the entire 2015-16 season, while the College of Charleston men will host a silent auction of “We Are All Charleston” game-worn, numbered warm-up shirts on the concourse of TD Arena beginning at 4 p.m. during the women’s game.

The silent auction will end at halftime of the men’s game. All proceeds will benefit Emanuel AME Church Youth Groups.
