GP McLeer Jr.’10 has been named the incoming executive director of the South Carolina Arts Alliance.
McLeer, a vocal arts proponent within the Palmetto State, will begin his leadership position July 1, 2016, at the statewide arts advocacy nonprofit, leaving his position as the administrator of the Office of Cultural Affairs in Mauldin, South Carolina. He also serves on the board of the South Carolina Arts Alliance as first vice president.
This year, McLeer was recognized by the College’s School of the Arts with its Young Alumnus Award. Among McLeer’s favorite memories at the College, according to his website, is being part of a private audience who got to listen to a soundcheck by rock band REO Speedwagon. He graduated from the College with a bachelor’s degree in arts management.
Arts Alliance President Rose Sheheen praised McLeer’s “enthusiasm, vigor, youth and passion” as well as his ability to work well with artists and arts partners across the state.
“He has extensive experience working with government officials and a broad spectrum of artists and arts agencies,” said Sheheen.”As the sole employee of a nonprofit arts center and local government office, he has been responsible for everything from booking acts to grant-writing and even operating the lights during performances.”
McLeer says he’s eager to use his new position to help keep promoting the arts across South Carolina.
“I have lived in South Carolina my whole life and have seen how the arts have positively impacted the lives of my family, friends and community,” McLeer said. “My passion has always been to help ensure that the arts can thrive in my community, so to be able to expand that passion to all communities in South Carolina is something I am ecstatic about.”
