College of Charleston Athletics Director Joe Hull announced today that he will be stepping down from his position at the end of his contract, which runs through December 2016.
“On behalf of the College, I want to thank Joe for his many years of hard work and service to the Cougars,” said College of Charleston President Glenn F. McConnell ’69. “During his tenure, we have seen a rise in the national recognition of our athletics programs and the College’s successful transition from the Southern Conference to the Colonial Athletic Association. We are a stronger athletics department because of Joe’s many contributions.”
Under Hull’s leadership, which began in 2007, the Cougars have claimed 42 conference championships in 12 different sports as well as national titles in sailing and equestrian. Hull is also credited with attracting top-tier coaching talent, which includes Earl Grant (men’s basketball), Candice Jackson (women’s basketball) and Matt Heath (baseball) as well as former coaches Monte Lee ’00 (now with Clemson University) and Natasha Adair (now with Georgetown University).
“During my time as AD, I have operated as a servant leader working to serve the best interests of our student-athletes, our coaches, our staff and the College of Charleston,” said Athletics Director Hull. “We have established a culture of student-athletes competing for championships athletically, achieving high marks academically, while also acting as good citizens. This is the essence of what college athletics and representing the College publicly should be about.”
The College will launch a national search for a new athletics director beginning this summer.
