Jerry Baker ’74 is coming home.
The former College of Charleston athletics director is coming back to his alma mater as the new executive director of the Cougar Club.

“The College has made a fine selection in Jerry Baker as its next executive director of the Cougar Club,” said College of Charleston President Glenn F. McConnell ’69. “As a former member and leader of the College’s Athletics Department, Jerry worked tirelessly to enhance the student-athlete experience and game-day atmosphere at our institution. I am so pleased he is coming home to his alma mater. His passion, energy and leadership for student-athletes will serve the College well moving forward.”
During his 15 years as athletic director (from 1991 to 2007), Baker helped lead the Cougars’ transition from the NAIA to NCAA Division I. He was also instrumental in improving Charleston’s sports facilities, including the Cougars’ $45 million basketball and volleyball facility and the renovations to the Patriots Point Athletics Complex.
Baker is a 1974 graduate of the College of Charleston and was inducted into the CofC Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013.
Baker stepped down as the College’s athletics director in 2007 and later served as the executive director of The Citadel Brigadier Foundation for more than six years.
The Cougar Club is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which has served as the fundraising arm for the College of Charleston Athletics Department for nearly 40 years. The Cougar Club exists to provide financial support for student-athlete scholarships, in addition to sport-specific fundraising and athletics facility improvements.
