Andrew Sobiesuo, associate provost for international education at the College of Charleston and director of the College’s Center for International Education, was recently elected to the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) Academic Consortium Board (ACB).
Sobiesuo was chosen to fill the open ACB seat from a pool of accomplished and talented study-abroad professionals from the nation’s finest colleges and universities. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to international education and exchange and an understanding of the management of international programs.
A tenured member of the College of Charleston faculty, Sobiesuo is the College’s senior international officer, providing leadership in the development, implementation and management of all international programs and services. After completing his B.A. at the University of Ghana, Legon, he studied hispanic philology at Universidad Complutense de Madrid and subsequently completed an M.A. and Ph.D. at Ohio State University. Before joining the College of Charleston faculty, Sobiesuo taught at Ohio Wesleyan University and Ohio State. His research focuses on the Afro-Hispanic and diasporan literatures, international education and diversity in education abroad. In 2013, he was awarded the International Education Administrator (IEA) Fulbright grant to the U.K. and in 2017 was selected for the IEA Fulbright award to Germany.
The ACB – which consists of 13 members, plus one ex officio member and one board observer – represents the consortium and upholds CIEE’s high standards of quality. Members serve four-year terms with a limit of two consecutive terms, and are responsible for monitoring CIEE Study Center programs, among other duties.
