The College of Charleston will host the regional finals of the South Carolina Poetry Out Loud Competition this Saturday, Jan. 21, 2018 at 1:30 p.m.

Students from area high schools will recite poetry as they vie for the chance to compete in the State Poetry Out Loud finals on March 10, 2018 in Columbia, South Carolina. The winner of the South Carolina contest will advance to the Poetry Out Loud National Finals in Washington, D.C., later this year.

Students competing at the College of Charleston this weekend have already won school-wide Poetry Out Loud contests at the following schools:

Academy for the Arts, Sciences, and Technology (Myrtle Beach)

Ashley Hall School (Charleston)

Bishop England High School (Daniel Island)

Carver’s Bay High School (Hemingway)

Charleston County School of the Arts (Charleston)

First Baptist Church High School (Charleston)

Goose Creek High School (Goose Creek)

Hilton Head Preparatory School ( Hilton Head Island)

Scholars Academy (North Charleston)

Waccamaw High School  (Pawleys Island)

Wando High School (Mount Pleasant)

Whale Branch Early College High School (Seabrook)

The competition is hosted by the College of Charleston Department of English and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, assisted by members of the Lowcountry Initiative for the Literary Arts (LILA). This event is free and open to the public. I will take place at the Stern Student Center Ballroom.

American Sign Language Interpreters will translate poems as they are read and recited.
