This distinguished group of pioneers includes CofC Athletics Hall of Famer Remus Harper ’72, who was the first black student-athlete to play at CofC under former head coach Fred Daniels from 1969 to 72. During his years at the College, Harper was a standout on the basketball court and in the classroom, serving as team captain and class valedictorian. He graduated in 1972 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

Current CofC Associate Athletics Director for Compliance Otto German ‘73 is the second black student-athlete to receive a full basketball scholarship and graduate from the College of Charleston. German is in his 44th year of service at his alma mater and was a four-year letter winner from 1970 to 73. He was an all-conference selection in 1970 and earned his bachelor’s degree in elementary education. German assumed his current post within the Department of Athletics in 1992 and was the recipient of the Eddie Ganaway Distinguished Alumni Award in 2009.

Trailblazers Carrie (Nesbitt) Gibbs ’72 and Linda Dingle Gadson ’72, the first and second black female graduates of the College of Charleston, respectively, will also be recognized for their impact and contributions to the College.

The four alumni will be recognized at mid-court during Thursday’s game where men’s basketball, ranked No. 1 in the CAA, will take on Elon. The game begins at 7 p.m. in TD Arena.
