The College of Charleston is celebrating International Women’s Day with a “speak out” and “walk out” starting in the Cistern Yard at 3 p.m. on Friday, March 8, 2019.

CofC and the greater Charleston community are invited to join the College’s Gender and Sexuality Equity Center (GSEC) and Women’s and Gender Studies Program (WGS) in this celebration, which begins with short talks from community leaders working to confront the oppressive systems that hinder liberation and equity, followed by a spirited procession through campus to show support for gender equity.

“We recognize International Women’s Day as a day that highlights the work that women are doing across the globe to strengthen their communities, to advance the liberation of all genders and to create more sustainable lives on the planet,” says Hollis France, GSEC’s director and an associate professor in the political science department and the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Program.

The event is part of the programming for GSEC’s annual Gender Equity Week (March 4–8, 2019) and also commemorates the College’s Year of Women (2018–19 academic year) celebrating 100 years of female students at the College.
