Name: Chrystal C. Grant ’12

Hometown: Darlington, South Carolina

Education: B.S. in sociology, B.A. in African American studies, both from CofC; currently attending Liberty University for my master’s in marriage and family therapy

Job title: Administrative Specialist II in the Department of English

How long have you worked at the College? In my current position, 7 1/2 years

What are your job responsibilities? I help coordinate events for the department; contact Facilities Management for any building related issues; order office supplies; distribute office mail; assist administrators, faculty and the department chair; interact with parents and their students; control the computer inventory; and more.

What do you like most about your job? Interacting with prospective students, faculty and students.

What question do you get asked most in your job and whatโ€™s your typical answer? One question Iโ€™m constantly asked is if we teach the English language.ย I politely give the caller the correct contact person and contact number after Iโ€™ve had to assure them that we teach literature, not language. This happens often.

Whatโ€™s your favorite location on campus and why? I love sitting out on the grass at the Addlestone Library. Itโ€™s peaceful, beautiful and such a great place to eat your lunch (when itโ€™s not too hot out).

What are your hobbies? I love reading, writing short stories, making jewelry and purses and creating tasty paleo dishes, especially desserts.

What personal and/or professional accomplishment are you most proud of? Obtaining both of my undergraduate degrees here at the College while going through so many personal issues and health struggles.

Name a creative work (book, movie, performance, etc.) you enjoyed recently and why? Thereโ€™s not too much that I can read or view right now that is not centered around my studies, but I have been taking โ€œbreaksโ€ to watch Nollywood films (Nigerian films) on Netflix.

What was your favorite TV show growing up? I had two favorites: The Cosby Show and Matlock.

Whatโ€™s next on your bucket list? Iโ€™m currently working on my master’s in marriage and family therapy.

What is something your campus colleagues would be surprised to know about you? Iโ€™m seriously terrified of clowns. Yikes!

What was your first job? Babysitter

Whatโ€™s your favorite Lowcountry restaurant? Daveโ€™s Carry-Out downtown. Itโ€™s such a guilty pleasure and itโ€™s soooo very good!! Iโ€™ve been going there for over 20 years now.

Describe your perfect day: A day at the beach or in the mountains, with my husband, five children and our two dogs.
