Name: Chrystal C. Grant ’12

Hometown: Darlington, South Carolina

Education: B.S. in sociology, B.A. in African American studies, both from CofC; currently attending Liberty University for my master’s in marriage and family therapy

Job title: Administrative Specialist II in the Department of English

How long have you worked at the College? In my current position, 7 1/2 years

What are your job responsibilities? I help coordinate events for the department; contact Facilities Management for any building related issues; order office supplies; distribute office mail; assist administrators, faculty and the department chair; interact with parents and their students; control the computer inventory; and more.

What do you like most about your job? Interacting with prospective students, faculty and students.

What question do you get asked most in your job and what’s your typical answer? One question I’m constantly asked is if we teach the English language. I politely give the caller the correct contact person and contact number after I’ve had to assure them that we teach literature, not language. This happens often.

What’s your favorite location on campus and why? I love sitting out on the grass at the Addlestone Library. It’s peaceful, beautiful and such a great place to eat your lunch (when it’s not too hot out).

What are your hobbies? I love reading, writing short stories, making jewelry and purses and creating tasty paleo dishes, especially desserts.

What personal and/or professional accomplishment are you most proud of? Obtaining both of my undergraduate degrees here at the College while going through so many personal issues and health struggles.

Name a creative work (book, movie, performance, etc.) you enjoyed recently and why? There’s not too much that I can read or view right now that is not centered around my studies, but I have been taking “breaks” to watch Nollywood films (Nigerian films) on Netflix.

What was your favorite TV show growing up? I had two favorites: The Cosby Show and Matlock.

What’s next on your bucket list? I’m currently working on my master’s in marriage and family therapy.

What is something your campus colleagues would be surprised to know about you? I’m seriously terrified of clowns. Yikes!

What was your first job? Babysitter

What’s your favorite Lowcountry restaurant? Dave’s Carry-Out downtown. It’s such a guilty pleasure and it’s soooo very good!! I’ve been going there for over 20 years now.

Describe your perfect day: A day at the beach or in the mountains, with my husband, five children and our two dogs.
