blood drive

The American Red Cross is holding a blood drive at the College of Charleston Stern Student Center, 71 George Street, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 7, 2021.

The blood drive is open to faculty, staff, students and the public. Donors ages 16–24 will get a $10 Tango e-gift card, redeemable at their restaurant/shop of choice.

Two types of appointments are available:

  • Power Red: A Power Red donation collects the red cells but returns most of the plasma and platelets to the donor. These donors must meet specific eligibility requirements and have type A Neg, B Neg or O blood.
  • Blood: The most common type of donation, during which approximately a pint of “whole blood” is given. This type of blood donation usually takes about an hour.

All donors will receive a COVID-19 antibody test. The Red Cross is following FDA blood donation eligibility guidance for those who receive a COVID-19 vaccination. Although COVID-19 vaccination status does not typically affect donor eligibility, donors will be asked which vaccine (manufacturer) they have received. In most cases, there’s no deferral time.
