The College of Charleston COVID-19 Leadership Team shared the following message with the campus community on Tuesday, June 29, 2021:
Dear Campus Community:ย ย
Weย hope your summer is going well.ย Weย wanted to update you regarding our revised COVID-19 protocols, which will take effectย Tuesday,ย Julyย 6, 2021, and will be in place for the fall and spring semesters. These guidelines areย similar toย what other South Carolina public institutions of higher education are doing. However, please note, the College of Charleston reserves the right to change these protocolsย when necessary.ย ย ย ย
In creating these revised guidelines, theย Collegeโsย COVID-19 leadership team developed them with other university officials across the state, public health officials from the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (S.C. DHEC) as well as at the direction of the South Carolina General Assembly. The College of Charlestonโs plan is in alignment with state law and other university plans across the stateย and alsoย much of the country.ย ย
Please read carefully the following updates, which will also be posted on the Collegeโsย Back on the Bricksย website:ย ย
VACCINATIONSย
- In accordance with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and S.C. DHEC guidelines, the College of Charleston strongly recommends its students, faculty and staff receive the COVID-19 vaccine. However, please note: a COVID-19 vaccination is not required for any student to enroll or participate in campus activities. Nor is the vaccine required for any employee to work at the College of Charleston.ย ย
- Every student, including returning students, should complete the College of Charleston COVID-19 Vaccination Documentationย orย Declinationย Formย (https://forms.office.com/r/JyD5fwfA2p). This information is critical to decision-making related to the operation of theย Collegeย during the 2021โ22 academic year.ย
- The information entered into the Microsoft form is kept strictly confidential; neither parents nor students will receive an email that indicates their vaccination status โ whether vaccinated or unvaccinated.ย
FACE-COVERINGS/MASKSย
- As of Julyย 6,ย face-coverings and masks are not required while on campus.ย ย
- Please note: Per the CDC and S.C. DHEC guidelines, those who are not vaccinated or those who wish to continue to wear face-coverings/masks are encouraged to do so.ย ย
IN THE CLASSROOMย
- For in-person classes, classrooms and course sections will be filled to the fire-code capacity of the room.ย
- Within each classroom,ย 3ย feet of social distancing should be maintained.ย ย
MEETINGS/GATHERINGSย
- Non-academicย gatherings are no longer subject to attendance restrictions.ย ย
- Pleaseย note:ย spaces used for meetings and events are restored to their pre-COVID capacity with 3 feet of social distance.ย
- Event hosts, for both academic and non-academic gatheringsย that are Collegeย sponsored, should maintain a record of attendees at each event should contract tracing be necessary.ย ย
COLLEGE OF CHARLESTONโSPONSOREDย HOUSINGย
- In order to participate in move-in, students living inย on-campusย housingย (such asย residence halls and historic houses)ย who have not been vaccinated areย required to upload evidenceย by midnight, August 16,ย of either:ย
- ย Aย positive COVID-19 testย dated after May 22,ย 2021;ย ย
- ย Aย negative PCR or antigen test conducted between August 12ย and August 19, 2021.ย
- NOTE: the College of Charleston will not accept antibody tests.ย
- Students failing to submit appropriate documentation should expect that their move-in will be delayed until documentation is produced.ย
- Students who test positive prior to move-in should plan to complete their 10-day isolation away from campus.ย ย ย
- Documentation can be submittedย by this link:ย https://forms.office.com/r/AkjnxmLVk3ย ย
QUARANTINE AND ISOLATIONย
- Non-vaccinated students who are identified as the close contact of someone that has tested positive for COVID-19 will be required to follow a quarantine-and-isolation protocol.
- If unvaccinated campus members are deemed to be the close contact of a positive case, the College will follow COVID-19 disease mitigation strategies in accordance with public health officials.
- Anyone who is positive for COVID, whether vaccinated or unvaccinated, must isolate for 10 days, per CDC and DHEC guidance.
COLLEGEย OF CHARLESTONโSPONSORED TRAVELย
- For faculty and staff,ย College-sponsoredย domestic travel is permitted; regardingย College-sponsoredย international travel, faculty and staff are to work with their division heads.ย For those employees traveling for work, the CDC strongly recommends being vaccinated.ย ย
- Requirements aroundย College-sponsored student travel, both domestic and international,ย are being finalized this summer. More details will be shared closer to the start of the fall semester.ย ย
- Special Note: By October 1, 2021, the Provostโs Office, in consultation with the president and the Center for International Education, will update the campus community regarding the status of spring 2022 faculty-led and partner study-abroad programs.
While the College of Charleston is excited to have a sense of โnormalcyโ return to our campus this summer and fall,ย weย want to remind our entire campus community that, just as we did last year, we will pivot and change course as quickly as the situation dictates.ย
Weย know this past year was difficult, butย we areย proud of our campusโ response to the pandemic, andย weย know we will face any future challenges with the same energy, creativity and resilience as before.ย ย
Weย look forward to seeing everyone on campus soon! Have a great summer!ย And,ย go Cougars!ย
Best,ย ย
