Cunningham served as the U.S. representative from South Carolina’s 1st congressional district from 2019 to 2021. He attended the College of Charleston before graduating from Florida Atlantic University with a degree in ocean engineering. After graduation, he worked for a marine and environmental consulting firm in Naples, Florida, for five years before being laid off during the 2008 recession. He later graduated from Northern Kentucky University’s Salmon P. Chase College of Law. After passing the bar exam, Cunningham moved back to Charleston where he began practicing construction law at a downtown firm.
The Bully Pulpit Series at the College of Charleston encourages and facilitates political participation throughout the campus community by providing a platform for dialogue with state and national leaders. Through town hall events with political candidates, the Bully Pulpit Series reinforces the message that citizen interest and involvement are essential components of a healthy democracy.
The program is co-managed by the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Department of Communication and the Department of Political Science at the College of Charleston.
